Why China is the Digital Nomad Destination No One Talks About (But Should)

Discover why China is the digital nomad destination you’re missing—fast internet, visa-free entry, rich culture, and insider travel tips.

When you think of top digital nomad destinations, places like Bali, Lisbon, or Medellín probably come to mind. But what if I told you there’s an underrated gem that offers breathtaking landscapes, fast infrastructure, and a cultural experience unlike anywhere else? Welcome to China.

As a China-born digital nomad who has lived and worked remotely across the globe, I was surprised myself by how much China has to offer for location-independent professionals. Yet, it’s still largely absent from the global nomad conversation. Here’s why that needs to change.

Digital Nomad in China: Misconceptions and Realities

Many nomads skip over China because of assumptions: the language barrier, internet censorship, and the belief that it’s too difficult to navigate. But the reality on the ground paints a different picture. With the right tools and mindset, China is not only accessible but also incredibly rewarding.

Yes, you’ll need a VPN to access certain websites and apps, but reliable enterprise-grade VPNs exist (I personally use one that has never failed me over three years of working from China). As for language, translation apps and QR code-based systems make getting around surprisingly easy, even for non-Mandarin speakers.

Digital Nomad in China: World-Class Infrastructure & Digital Life

China’s infrastructure is nothing short of impressive. From lightning-fast high-speed trains to widely available fiber-optic internet, it’s incredibly easy to get around and stay connected. Mobile payment systems like WeChat Pay and Alipay make life seamless—no cash or even credit cards needed.

Coworking spaces are growing in number, especially in major cities and emerging second-tier hubs like Chengdu, Kunming, and Guilin. Even if you don’t base yourself in a coworking space full-time, cafes with great Wi-Fi and public libraries are plentiful.

Digital Nomad in China: Cultural Depth and Off-the-Beaten-Path Experiences

China is a country of vast contrasts: ancient temples next to futuristic skylines, remote mountain villages just hours from buzzing urban centers. You can wander through traditional tea houses, hike limestone karsts, or try regionally unique dishes every day of the month.

Unlike mainstream nomad hotspots that can sometimes feel over-saturated, exploring China still feels fresh. You won’t find rows of drop-shipping startups or crypto bros at every turn—just locals living life and a country full of stories to tell.

Visa-Free Entry for 47 Countries

For the first time in history, China now allows citizens of 47 countries to enter visa-free for up to 30 days. This includes most European nations as well as countries in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. You can check the current list and eligibility on China Briefing.

This new policy marks a shift in how China is engaging with the world—and it’s the perfect opportunity for curious nomads to explore without jumping through visa hoops.

Digital Nomad in China: Why Now Is the Best Time to Go

China is in a unique moment: open, curious, and under-visited by the global nomad crowd. That means you get the magic of discovery, the affordability of less touristed destinations, and the comfort of world-class infrastructure all at once.

While hotspots like Chiang Mai and Mexico City remain wonderful, they’re also crowded. China gives you a chance to forge your own path, connect more deeply with local life, and experience something truly different.

A Personal Note: Why I Host This Retreat

I started hosting digital nomad retreats in China because I saw how much my fellow nomads were missing. After years of attending retreats around the world, I realized there was a gap: no one was creating these immersive experiences in China. So I launched a retreat program that blends coworking, cultural immersion, and community.
